7 of the Best Spring Break Activities in Austin, Texas

Before the pandemic, there were around 27.4 million visitors to Austin each year. As the world gets back on track, tourism is returning to this vibrant and lively city. But do you know about the amazing activities you can do here?

The city really starts to open up in spring, when festivals get planned and nature is in bloom. Read on as we discuss the best spring break activities to do in Austin, Texas.

1. Watch Wildflowers in Bloom

One of the most beautiful things to do in Austin, Texas, is to behold the majesty of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Centre. Every spring, 650 plants native to Texas blossom in the expansive gardens and trails. This is a side of the state that many rarely expect or get to see.

Trails are open by reservation only and they do have limited capacity. If you can't get in here, then visit nearby Burnet which is known as the Bluebonnet capital. If you manage to visit in April, there is even a festival of music, flowers, and parades held.

2. Visit Lady Bird Lake

Lady Bird Lake is a huge reservoir in the Colorado River. Originally, it was built as a cooling pond for the cities new power plant. A public effort to restore the beauty and cleanliness in the seventies means that it is now one of the most sunkissed and relaxing spots to spend the day.

Now a major recreation area, the lake can be a hive of activity. Ziker Park, Austin's largest downtown park is situated close to it. The beautiful Barton Springs also flow into its body.

As the use of motorized vehicles is prohibited, it has also become a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Paddleboards, kayaks, and dragon boats can often be seen skimming the surface.

3. Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is one of the essential activities when in Texas, intrinsically linked to its past and culture. Outstanding beauty in the hills can only be truly appreciated while horse riding. You can take part whatever your age may be.

Our company has a range of packages for the whole family. We can give you the good old-fashioned Ranch Ride, or cater for children and families with our Little Dude Ride.

The jewel in the crown is our horseback tour of the Victory Chevall Estate. A 100-acre estate, it has rolling pastures and ancient oak trees. As well as this, you will get a tour of a historical graveyard that is the resting place of Davy Crockett's relatives!

4. Scale Mount Bonnell

Mount Bonnell is one of the highest points in Austin, reaching 781 feet above sea level. It provides you with the best look of the downtown area and the 360 bridge down below. Located in Covert park, the mount is a fantastic stop for pictures and a picnic.

The peak was named after George Bonnell, who was the Commissioner of Indian Affairs for the Texas Republic. Walking to the top is not actually that arduous, and requires a 102 stair climb. As well as being a great, gentle walk for all ages it is totally free.

5. Visit a Rodeo

After the gentle horseback riding, you may want to spend the evening experiencing some true Texas grit. This can be found at the famous Rodeo Austin, which manages to combine a host of entertainment types with its traditional cowboy activities.

For those who don't know, Rodeo is a show of skills that are used for rounding up herds and cattle. Most famous is the prowess at riding a bucking bronco, though wrestling steers and roping calves are also included. These traditional ranch skills are a real spectacle to behold.

Rodeo is often incorporated with a number of other events, such as BBQ cook-offs, galas, and even music concerts. You can see pro rodeo every day, and if you have the skills, you may even want to take part.

Finally, the Bullock Museum is another treasure that houses exhibitions on the history of Texas. These change regularly and can be as varied as pieces on the impact of oil and gas in the area to the folk art of the region. The center also houses a large Imax theatre showing the latest movies and documentaries should you wish to catch a blockbuster.
